<isc:description>Howdini's Kimberly Austin complete guide for how to prepare for a bedbug extermination. There is quite a bit you can do to confirm you have bed bugs and determine the extent of the infestation. Figuring out the level of your infestation will help you decide whether it is light enough for you to treat it yourself or call a pest management professional. A light infestation is when there are no more than 20 live bugs found per room or no more than 40 fecal traces and the infestation is contained to less than one third of the home. For light infestation you can do the following:Reduce all clutter in the infested room to try eliminate hiding places for the bugs.Wash and dry all clothing and place in sealed plastic bags.Thoroughly clean the house using a HEPA Vacuum Cleaner and/or Steamer. Make sure you also vacuum/steam mattresses, box springs, window treatments, headboards and any cracks and crevices.Wash all bedding and encase all mattresses and box springs.Launder all washable items and place any shoes, bags etc in dryer for 20 minutes on high heat. Afterward, place items in ZipLoc sealed bags or a BugZip.Dismantle beds to locate any hiding places.Pull bed away from wall and place ClimbUp Insect Interceptor on legs of bed. Make sure bedding does not touch the floor.Caulk and seal all holes and cracks around pipes, electrical outlets, base boards and molding.</isc:description>

<isc:description>The Bed Bug Beacon is an inexpensive active bed bug monitor for at-home use. From the makers of PackTite™, Bedbug Beacon™ attracts bed bugs in as little as a few minutes, although can take up to two weeks for early infestations. For drawing bed bugs out of walls or furniture, we recommend the Bedbug Beacon™ CO2 (carbon dioxide) producing monitor. From the makers of PackTite™, Bedbug Beacon™ attracts bed bugs in as little as a few minutes, although can take up to two weeks for early infestations. Unlike dry ice, Bedbug Beacon™ is easy to work with, lasts for at least 5 days at a time and comes with enough supplies for two sessions, each lasting 5 to 7 days. The Bedbug Beacon draws bed bugs out of the walls so now you don't have to be their bait or nightly feeding ground. Also great for using after treatment to catch any stubborn bed bugs that have survived or have just hatched. Any eggs present during treatment will survive pesticides as only heat/steam kills eggs reliably. Exterminators have found the Beacon especially useful at catching bed bugs when the nesting location is not the same room as the feeding location. Placing the Beacon in between will capture many of the bed bugs when they are on the move at night. Landlords should use the Beacon to find out if an apartment has bed bugs after tenants move out. Renters and prospective home buyers should use Beacon before moving in to be sure they are not walking into a problem as part of the normal home inspection process. Some key product features are:Allows around-the-clock monitoring.Enables ongoing monitoring after treatment.Economical and reusable.Detects adults and nymphs.Provides early detection of bedbug infestations. In effect, its cheaper and easier than making your own DIY monitor with dry ice. And in tests, the makers of PackTite™ found the Bed Bug Beacon to be as effective as the DIY monitor in side by side tests. (See video below for more on the trials.)</isc:description>

<isc:description>They're creepy, crawly, night-time feasters. Yep, bed bugs. Even if you've never encountered these pesky, skin-nibbling insects, just the thought of them will likely make your skin crawl. When traveling, you're particularly susceptible. Whether you're staying in high end hotels, dirt-cheap roadside motels or crammed in hostels, doesn't much matter - bed bugs dont give a hoot about star ratings. In an interview with Tanya Enberg of Chic Savvy Travels (CST) Blog, Adam Greenberg, bed bug expert and president of USBedBugs.com, reveals everything you need to know about reducing nasty encounters with bedbugs on the road and, more importantly, prevent them from hopping a ride home with you in your suitcase.CST: In recent years, bed bug warnings have skyrocketed why the sudden upsurge?Adam: While bed bugs were gone from the U.S. for about 30 years, they still existed in pockets around the world. As the U.S. has really cut back on use of strong pesticides like DDT, the environment exists for many insects to return. Bed bugs were first spotted in small numbers here in the late '90s and have been growing in numbers ever since. CST: Chic Savvy Travels fans are huge world explorers. When it comes to accommodation style of our global travel community, it can range from five-star-style one day, to gritty-backpacking hostel the next. Does the level of accommodation impact the bedbug risk, or are all of them equally at risk of infestation? Adam: Bed bugs do not discriminate and can be found wherever people are sleeping, whether that is a five-star resort or a youth hostel. Hotels that have a higher turnover of guests are a higher risk of bed bugs because every guest is a potential source coming in to the facility.Hotels that have average stays of a week or two have fewer people coming in and therefore less chance of bed bugs. Of course it only takes one person to bring bed bugs in so all travelers need to be vigilant wherever they stay. I have found that the fancier hotels have more at stake with regard to their reputation and better funding so they tend to be more proactive at bringing in exterminators and canines to sniff out bed bugs.CST: For backpackers, rooms are often shared dorm-style. Any suggestions for decreasing the risk of bedbugs in these cramped situations? Adam: Either bed bugs are already in the room or they aren't. Make sure everyone checks the edges of their mattress for signs of bed bugs before settling in. You're looking for black spotting that looks like mold around the edges of the mattress, perhaps on or around the mattress tag or even behind the headboard. CST: What tips in general can you offer to travelers who want to reduce the risk of bedbug bites and - worse - preventing the critters from hopping in their luggage and coming back home with them?Adam: To reduce the risk of bed bug bites, make sure you inspect the bed area as mentioned before settling in. If the bed bugs have been there for more than a few weeks already, you will be able to spot signs of bed bugs and ask for a different room. Covering arms, legs, etc...with clothing will cut down on the bug bites for a short while. Bites are a minor inconvenience compared to the traumatic experience of bringing bed bugs home with you.It is critical that travelers keep all their belongings off the floor, away from the bed, and out of the drawersall places where bed bugs are hiding. I strongly recommend using some sort of plastic bags to keep your suitcases and clothes secure. Excellent options include contractor grade, heavy-duty garbage bags, ZipLoc Big Bags and also BugZip Travel Protectors that zipper around your whole backpack or suitcase so you dont have to unpack.Click Here to Read Full Article at Chic Savvy Travels</isc:description>

<isc:description>Cities enjoy being identified as safe and affordable. Being labeled as having a lot of bed bug treatments, not so much.Rollins, the corporation that owns seven pest control companies, including Orkin, says it has seen a 33.6 percent increase in bed bug business compared to 2010. The company has just released its rankings of U.S. cities in order of the number of bed bug treatments from January to December 2011.And the winner is Cincinnati. Chicago is ranked second, followed by Detroit, Denver and Los Angeles. The report says L.A. moved from 25th to fifth on the list.Several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity. The changes could also be because the bed bug population is increasing overall, or even because the public is becoming more aware of bed bugs and has become better adept at identifying them. The top 50 cities can be Read On ABC News Radio. <isc:description>Fort Myers NBC-2.com WBBH News Reports - Pest control professionals say insects are invading homes in Southwest Florida thanks to a warmer than usual winter.Watch their full news clip belowWith a string of 70-plus degree days this week, people are trading in their boots for sandals and retiring winter coats to closets. But humans aren't the only ones eager to scurry out into the spring-like warmth. The warm weather is a good sign for all types of bugs, good and bad. After one of the mildest winters on record, mosquitoes, termites, ticks and even stink bugs are already making their moves, hatching and leaving hibernation earlier than usual.“Bed bug activity is usually much quieter in the winter and early spring than it is in the summer and fall. However, due to the unusually warm winter nationwide, we have seen a huge increase in bed bug activity starting in the beginning of February,” says Adam Greenberg, President of USBedBugs.com, “Hardest hit so far this year are schools, hospitals, clinics, hostels and group homes. With spring break around the corner, travelers should be extremely vigilant this year and make sure they take precautions or there is a good chance they could be bringing bed bugs home from their trip.” </isc:description>

<isc:description>Indianapolis WishTV reports on an attempt to exterminate bed bugs and how it led to a house fire Monday in the Fountain Square area. Crews went to a home in the 900 block of Lexington Avenue at 11:33 a.m. for the fire, Indianapolis Fire Department officials said. Two men were trying to get the bed bugs out of their home, so they dragged three couches and two chairs into the backyard, IFD officials said. They intentionally set them on fire with a lighter and piece of newspaper, but the fire quickly lit the nearby home on fire. Although the men tried to put out the fire with a hose, they weren't successful. It took 11 IFD units to handle the fire, which left about $15,000 in damages. The residents planned to stay with friends.Remember, we strongly recommend contacting a pest control professional whenever bed bugs are spotted and not to move anything so the exterminator can easily check to see how bad the problem is.**Click here to view pictures of the aftermath**</isc:description>

<isc:description>Here are a few subjects that are covered. Before you leave for travel, open suitcase and pack items sealed in either a BugZip bag or Ziploc bag. Once sealed they will remain bedbug free until you unseal so no need to worry about non clothing items getting infected during the journey. While traveling, check areas around you as much as possible but avoid looking suspicious at the airport by checking under everything and check the seat before you sit down on the plane.Upon returning home, outside of home remove the protective layers of wrap and place in bin / recycling this has ensured your bags always remain safe and therefore the contents are also safe. Remove outer layer of clothes and place in dissolvable laundry bag and wash at 60 degree centigrade or equivalent or PackTite or place in hot dryer for extended time. Personal items such as phones, wallets and cards are highly unlikely to become infected if you check locations. Click here to read the full article. <isc:description>How do you prevent bed bugs coming home with your kids? Here are some tips you might want to consider:Have your kids change as soon as they come home; and wash their school-wear in hot water, and tumble dry on high. Worried about bringing the clothes through the house? Throw them into a GreenClean Dissolvable Laundry Bag. Have your kids shower after school every day, making sure they shampoo their hair.Keep their school bag and jacket separate, in the porch or garage, to reduce the risk of bringing bugs inside. You should also check with your children every day to make sure they haven't been bitten by anything during the night. Bed bug bites are red and blotchy; and often appear in threes indicating the signature breakfast, lunch and dinner feeding cycle of bed bugs.If you hear of a bed bug outbreak at your school, dont panic. Washing clothes, jackets and bags when your kids come home is often enough to help prevent bed bugs graduating to your home. You can also use our 100% green product Bed Bug 911 Unscented Natural Bed Bug Spray to effectively eradicate bed bugs from book bags and other items. And whether or not theyre tackling a bed bug problem, we recommend directing friends and parents to the all-natural Bed Bug 911 Spray as it is safe to use around children, pets, homes and hospitals.Rather than the expense and embarrassment of calling an exterminator, these products allow them to deal safely, effectively and affordably with bed bug infestation themselves.</isc:description>

Though bed bugs have been in the news a lot in recent years, there's a surprising amount of misinformation floating around about these blood-sucking ectoparasites. How much do you know about bed bugs?

<isc:description>Debbie Hadley from About.com has gone over 10 Myths About Bed Bugs. Here we have listed the first 3 myths. Make sure to follow the link below to read about the remaining 7 myths.&#49. If you wake up with bug bites, you must have bed bugs.- With so much news about bed bug infestations, you might immediately think bed bugs are the culprit if you wake up with mysterious bites on your skin. Don't panic! First of all, quite a few other arthropods could be the cause of your bite marks, including fleas, mites, or even bat bugs. Also, many medical conditions cause symptoms that look similar to bug bites. If the marks persist but you don't find signs of an infestation, it might be worth a trip to your doctor. &#50. I'm the only one in my house with bug bites, so they can't be from bed bugs. - If you're the only one in your household waking up with bites, that doesn't exclude bed bugs as the cause. People react to bed bug bites differently, just as they do with mosquito bites or other insect bites. It's really a matter of how your body reacts to the bed bug saliva when you're bitten. Two people can sleep on the same bed bug infested mattress, and one can wake up without any signs of being bitten while the other is covered in bite marks. &#51. Bed bugs are so tiny, you can't see them with the naked eye. - It's true that bed bugs are pretty small insects, but they aren't microscopic. If you know where to look for them, you can definitely see them without the aid of a magnifier. The bed bug nymph is roughly the size of a poppy seed, and grows larger from there. Bed bug adults measure a bit larger than 1/8th of an inch, or about the size of an apple seed or a lentil. The eggs, which are just the size of a pinhead, will be harder to see without magnification. <isc:description>The words bed bugs are enough to send most of us running withskin all a quiver at the thought of little blood-sucking creatures crawling all over us as we sleep. These little bugs are pests, to be sure, and they can be difficult to get rid of once they have decided to make your house their home, hiding during the daylight hours in cracks and crevasses where they are almost impossible to excise.Because of this, you may not realize right away that bed bugs are the source of the annoying sores on your legs when you wake up in the mornings. Bed bugs are attracted by both warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, which is what we exhale in breathing. The bugs climb up onto your skin and pierce you with two hollow tubes, one of which injects anti-coagulants and anesthetics. The other tube is used to withdraw your blood, feeding for about five minutes before returning to their hiding places.Check out the National Geographic Channel video below on their feeding technique.Remember Knowledge is Power &#45 Click on the Bed Bug below for additional information from www.bed-bug.org</isc:description>

The bed bug invasion hits libraries across the county. USBedBugs.com offers tips on protecting and preventing bed bug infestations for library personnel.

<isc:description>Theres something new on library shelves - bed bugs. Libraries love bookworms, but they are not so sure about book bugs. Just like hotels, airplanes, movie theaters, hospitals, office buildings, retail stores, and homes where bed bugs lurk, now the tiny creatures are showing up at the library. The revelation that libraries are grappling with bed bugs comes as dozens of libraries across the country are reporting bed bug encounters. Bed bugs have been spotted in book drops, library chairs, shelves and, of course, books. In 2009 The Denver Public library had one particularly notorious example of a patron returning a number of infested antique books which caused the books to be destroyed to prevent further spread of the infestation. There have been quite a few libraries that reported bed bug problems recently. New Westminster and Taylor Library in Michigan are the most recent victims. Libraries now need to become educated on bed bugs to prevent the spread of infestations to patrons. Taylor Library Video Tips for libraries on preventing bed bug infestations:Train library staff to recognize bed bugs. Libraries need to take a more proactive approach to deal with the epidemic. Bed bugs by nature are reclusive, but they do have tell-tale signs that can be easily identified by a well-trained staff. When inspecting books, library staff should look for live bugs and dark brownish to black spots (fecal stains). Routinely Check all Returned Books and quarantine contaminated books that are suspected of having bed bugs. Seal the book in a plastic bag and isolate until it is deemed safe. Remember an adult bed bug can live over a year without feeding, so be sure all bugs are dead before placing the book back in circulation. Make a Plan once bed bugs are found. Industry experts recommend that bed bug eradication treatments in public establishments should be performed by a pest management professional. The library should be checked periodically for bed bugs and their tell-tale signs by the custodial staff. They also should consider canine inspections which have shown to be up to 97% accurate in detecting bed bugs. Check Upholstered Furniture Regularly and when feasible replace with non-fabric furniture. Bed Bugs have recently been found nesting in upholstered chairs in libraries in Colorado and Arizona. Heating Contaminated Items to a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit for at least an hour is an effective method of killing bed bugs, their larva and eggs. Portable heaters manufactured by PackTite are designed specifically for this purpose and are an effective way to quarantine and gently heat books, magazines, clothing and any suspected object. Additionally, a pest control professional can advise on larger heat systems for libraries.Monitor Book Return Areas with active monitor that use heat and/or CO2. Monitors are inexpensive and will detect bed bugs within days of their arrival, before they multiply and spread.Full Press Release </isc:description>

<isc:description> Most people carry bed bugs into their home unknowingly, in luggage, furniture, bedding or clothing. Bed bugs will also travel between apartments through cracks and crevices in walls and floors. Early detection of bed bugs can be very difficult and will often go undetected. Since bed bugs prefer to come out at night most people will have no idea they have brought them home until months after fact, when a few bugs multiplied into thousands. There are few prevention and detection products that are now available to help you catch the infestation before it becomes a nightmare and costs thousands in extermination fees. Mattress EncasementsThe great thing about mattress and box spring encasements is that there is no single best time to use one. They can and should be used all the time. A mattress and a box spring provide endless places to hide and in very close proximity to a next meal. Some benefits to using bedding encasements include that pesticides will not be needed on the bed itself in the event they are used at all. Encasements eliminate hiding places for bed bugs, and make them easier to detect. An added bonus is that for individuals with allergies or asthma, these bedding encasements limit exposure to dust mites as well. The best mattress and box spring encasements will be made of a material that will not rip or tear, and is comfortable. Cheaper encasements may not have these qualities. Most experts recommend Protect-A-Bed. Passive Monitors </isc:description>

<isc:description>Below is a picture of the life cycle of the bed bug. The image is from the book Bed Bug Beware by David Cain and Richard Strain and depicts all stages of a bed bug's life as they develop from egg to adult. The book is an easy to understand guide to bed bugs their prevention and control. Bed bugs have six life stages and will molt six times before becoming adults. A female bed bug will lay up to 300 eggs in her life time and about 8 eggs at any one time. The eggs hatch in 6-10 days and baby bed bugs are called nymphs until they reach adulthood. They shed their skins at each molting stage. The shells which are called cast skins are empty exoskeletons of bed bugs. A newly hatched nymph will seek a blood meal and need to feed at least once before each molt. Bed bugs can eat as often as once per day. Nymphs can live for several months without eating and adults can live as long as year without a meal. The normal life cycle of bed bug is about a year. </isc:description>
